MCL Uniform Summary

COVERS ( garrison cap )

The only insignia authorized to be worn on the left side Marine Corps League cover is the Marine Corps Emblem. (See Home Page)

Identification strips, i.e., Department or Detachment strip or embroidering, will be centered on the right side.
Officer strips are worn centered immediately above the Dept. or Detachment strip.
If the Life strip is worn, it will be to the rear of the right side.

Devil Dogs - May wear devil dog patch on right side symetric with Marine Corps Emblem on left side

NO Division pins or other ornaments are authorized to be worn on Marine Corps League covers.

cover, RED  - All members of the Marine Corps League are authorized to wear the red cover.
cover, GOLD -  Members elected to National office, or appointed to National Staff / Committees.
cover, GOLD w/WHITE crown - Past National Commandants
cover, WHITE  -  The National Commandant.
cover, RED w/GOLD crown - members elected to, or appointed to the Department (State) level.

Past Department Commandant, Past Detachment Commandant, Past Kennel Chief and Past National Director of Young Marines,
are the only members who are authorized to wear their respective officer strips (with the year(s) displayed for holding the office), after their tour of duty is completed.
All other personnel will revert back to previous authorized cover upon completion of elected or appointed tour of duty.


MEDALS & RIBBONS

Marine Corps League medals may be worn on any Marine Corps league uniform (except Casual), starting with the most distinguished medal/ribbon first and others following in sequence. See enclosure (4) National Award Section for further details. (Can be accessed here  in pdf)

Under no conditions are Marine Corps Service medals/ribbons or other DoD awards to be worn with Marine Corps League medals/ribbons. It's the member's choice which, but not both.

DoD or Marine Corps League ribbons are to be worn above left shirt pocket.

SHOES

BLACK, leather or Corfam or other artificial high gloss material, plain toe, either Oxford-style  six eyelet, or Chukka boot.

SOCKS -BLACK

SHIRTS - WHITE, cotton, cotton/poly blend, with plain collar worn open and flat, with military creasing
(Airline pilot style with two (2) pockets with button down flaps and epaulets)

Uniform, UNDRESS

Blazer - Not worn with Undress Uniform.
(USMC Red Satin Jacket available at MCL  store can be worn for inclimate weather) 

Shirt - short sleeve ( Spring & Summer )

            Collar - plain, worn open and flat, with military creasing
            Neck Tie - not worn with short sleeves

Shirt - long sleeve ( Fall & Winter )

            Collar - plain, worn buttoned closed, with military creasing
            Neck Tie - Black, plain, (no designs) with MCL or USMC gold tie bar

Shirt Sleeve, Left - MCL Shoulder Patch centered (on shoulder seam), 1.5" drop from sleave seam.

Shirt Sleeve, Right - (MCL Members) - U.S. Flag  (2" x 3.5")  centered, 1.5" drop from seam.
Shirt Sleeve, Right - (Devil Dogs) - Devil Dog patch,  centered, 1.5" drop from seam.

Collar insignia - MCL Sunbursts

Name Tag - Optional

Trousers - USMC Dress BLUE, with RED NCO Leg (blood) Stripe, 
                  - (optional) Black military uniform styling

Belt - USMC KHAKI, cotton, web with USMC brass buckle (w/dress blue trousers)
         - (optional) black leather dress w/USMC emblem (w/black trousers)

 

Uniform, CASUAL

Blouse - Blazer, CRIMSON

Buttons -  MCL, two - large, at waist
                -  MCL, three  - small, on each cuff

Insignia, pocket - Marine Corps League Crest or Bullion Seal

Insignia, collar - NONE, (MCL starbursts are not worn with the blazer)

Lapel pins - See Note 1 (below)

Shirt - WHITE, LONG SLEEVE, cotton/poly blend
         (Airline pilot style with two (2) pockets with button down flaps and epaulets)

Shirt patches - not required UNLESS YOU TAKE YOUR BLAZER OFF.

Neck Tie - Black, plain (no designs), with MCL or USMC gold tie bar

Trousers - Black. military uniform styling

Belt - Black, leather, dress, with EGA emblem on square gold buckle
         - (Alternate) - Black, leather, dress, with square gold or bright brass buckle
 

Uniform, FORMAL

Shirt - WHITE, cotton/poly, formal, French cuffs, plain collar with no visible stays, with front pleating and military creasing on back side only ( NOTE: No ruffles are permitted anywhere on shirt )

Shirt Fasteners - GOLD studs and cuff links

Neck Tie - Black, military bow tie, with no visible pins or stays

Blouse - MCL CRIMSON Mess Jacket with MCL GOLD waist chain, 
              - with MCL Sunburst Collar Emblems in lapel holes
              - (Alternate) - MCL Blazer, CRIMSON, no MCL Sunburst Collar emblems

Buttons - MCL, two - large, at waist
                - MCL, three  - small on each cuff

Blouse Pocket - Marine Corps League Crest or Bullion Seal
                               (Optional when miniature medals are worn)

Lapel Pins - See Note 1 - Below

Medals:
              - Miniature medals, as prescribed in MCL Uniform Standards (Can be accessed here  in pdf).
              - Large medals may be worn on CRIMSON Mess Jacket

Cummerbund - MCL-approved, GOLD,  or MCL GOLD vest front

Trousers - Black, formal, tuxedo style, with satin leg stripe
                  - (Alternate) - Black, military uniform styling

Belt - Black, leather, dress, with EGA emblem on square gold buckle
         - (Alternate) - Black, leather, dress, with square gold or bright brass buckle

NOTE 1:
The following lapel pins may be worn, but NOT more than two (2) - your choice:
The Past National Commandant Pin may be worn inboard with the National Marine of the Year outboard.
Also National Marine of the Year may be worn inboard with a Past Department or Detachment Commandant Pin (one (1) only).
The Chapel of Four Chaplains, Membership or Retired Marine lapel pins may also be worn, under same limitations.

 

Uniform, CEREMONIAL DETAILS

Shirt - USMC issue, SHORT sleeve, KHAKI, cotton/poly blend, with plain collar worn open and flat, with military creasing.

Khaki sleeve, LEFT - MCL Shoulder Patch

Khaki sleeve, RIGHT - U.S. Flag  (2" x 3 1/2")

Neck Tie - NONE AUTHORIZED with this uniform.

Collar insignia - MCL Sunbursts

Name Tag - Optional (all wear or none wear. Exception - Detail OIC may wear solo) 

Jacket - MCL RED nylon Jacket, Optional.(All wear or none wear, must be uniform in appearance)

Trousers - USMC Dress BLUE, with RED NCO Leg (blood) stripe

Belt - USMC KHAKI, cotton, web 

Buckle - USMC brass

Note:  The USMC-issue khaki shirt is for wear only by members of ceremonial details DURING ceremonial duties and will not be worn at any other Marine Corps League function, such as meetings, Department or National Conventions, etc.  

Other uniform variances

Detachments, individually, or as a group, may petition Department Commandants to seek approval of a variation from the standard MCL uniform guidelines, such as to cope with unusual weather conditions where applicable. Petitions must be in writing and include substantial justification for the variation and include color pictures of the requested variation, showing front and back and left and right side views.

Such uniform variations may be worn only after the Department Commandant has issued a written letter of approval.  Uniform variations approved for wear within one department are NOT concurrently approved for wear within any other department.
